Spring Safety

Prepare you and your family for the hazards of spring thunder storms.

A thunderstorm warning is issued

  • Stay tuned to weather reports.

  • Remember that lightning can cause power surges. Unplug appliances before a storm hits.

  • Avoid using the telephone. Telephone lines can conduct electricity.

  • Metal pipes can also conduct electricity. Stay away from faucets, sinks and bathtubs.

Outdoors during and after the storm

  • Treat all downed power lines as if they were live. Stay clear of the line and any object touching it.

  • Report the downed line immediately by calling SLECA’s 24-hour consumer service line at 876-6880 in Houma and 631-3605 in Amelia or call the local police.

  • If a line falls on your car while you are inside, stay put until help arrives. Do not touch anything outside the car or try to get out. If you must get out, open the door and jump clear without touching the ground and the car at the same time.

Power outages in your home

  • Check fuses and circuit breakers, then call SLECA to report the outage. Your call helps SLECA find the source of the outage.

  • Turn off all appliances but leave one light on. When power comes back on for an extended period (10 to15 minutes) turn on your appliances one at a time.

  • Be certain portable radios, flashlights and fresh batteries are available.

  • Take precautions for yourself and those around you with special needs. Plan for medications that require refrigeration or equipment that requires electricity. Have a cooler on hand to ice down medications or contact your health care provider for assistance.

  • Listen to local radio and television stations for status reports from SLECA about affected areas and restoration activities.
